Is Pilates the Key to Workplace Sanity?

A couple weeks ago, I got to attend a private class at Nolte Academy, where we learned the benefits of Pilates. And this one hour class, consisting mostly of holding certain positions and poses, kicked my ass.

Pilates is a series of different exercises and poses inspired by calisthenics, yoga and ballet. It is intended to lengthen and stretch your muscles. Pilates is awesome if you’re looking to improve flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness.

I left work on my lunch break to take a test drive of Nolte’s new Pilates program. It had been a busy day, I was already running late, and was probably sweating by the time I got there. We jumped right into a series of core strengthening movements and a bit of stretching.

Within minutes, all of my thoughts and worries of the day left my mind as I concentrated on holding each pose. I learned that Pilates is a form of exercise that is meant to unite the body with the mind. The instructor choreographed our breathing.

She counted as we rolled through our spines. I didn’t have to think about much since the poses were so simple, but they were so effective that I was shaking. After conditioning on the ground, we got up and began to use the ballet barre. This was definitely my favorite part as a former dancer. I felt right at home as we pliéd and stretched through each motion.

We transitioned into a super fun machine called a Pilates reformer. There are classes that are strictly based around using these machines. They’re great for anyone who has back pain or who needs a little help with their posture. This short class walked us through some of the different types of Pilates so that we could get a feel for which was right for us and our bodies.

And I cannot wait to come back when Nolte launches all of their new classes! This midday sweat sesh was just what I needed to clear my mind and do my work more happily and more efficiently. I suggest doing what I did, leaving work to attend a Pilates class, so that you can come back to work with a better perspective. Take one class and I bet you’ll come for more. Enjoy!
