This post is way overdue, but better late than never.
So chokers are back in style and can be found in absolutely every style imaginable.
Of course, with everything there’s the “haters” who can’t just let a good thing be just that, a good thing.
Ever since wearing chokers became a thing again I’ve been seeing posts saying that “girls with this around her neck have a black belt in…” or that chokers are worn as a sign of prostitution. The latter is partially correct, therefore i’m bout to give ya’ll a quick history lesson.
Chokers have a long history. This fashionable piece can be traced back to centuries in Chinese, Native American, Indian and even Egyptian cultures.
In 1978 for instance, chokers were worn as a political dress during the French Revolution. During the french revolution women wore red ribbons around their necks to pay homage to those who were killed at the guillotine.
In 1860, Chokers were the uniform of prostitutes. Now this is what all the hype was about, but pay attention….
In Manet’s famous 1863 painting titled “Olympia”, a prostitute is depicted wearing a BLACK ribbon around her neck. during THIS era, a ribbon around the neck could mean that the female wearing it was a prostitute.
In 1874, Ballerina’s and fashionable ladies wore chokers too. In the late 1800’s Chokers became a royal trend. The princess of Wale, Alexandra, wore thick rows of pearls and velvet to cover a scar on her neck of which she was very self conscious. It is said that this princess was influential in expanding the trend we know today. Princess Alexandra was said to have also been influenced by Indian dress and jewelry during her tenures in India, chokers being one of those trends.
Various women throughout history have worn chokers of many different styles. In the late 1800’s for instance, chokers were worn as markers of the elite. For most of us chokers became a thing in the 90’s as they were worn in every single style and by every celebrity that graced the stage or red carpet. the late 90’s was a time when the tattoo chokers were the THING and everybody in St. Maarten ran to Maleona’s in town to get one . I am extremely guilty and proud of this as I owned both the black and rainbow colored ones and LOVED it.
When the tattoo chokers came back on the scene in 2015, I freaked out and got one just for old time sake.
Now in 2016, chokers have become a crazy trend once again and i’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t loving it.
There are different styles to fit the taste of everyone, from the minimalist to those who like to be extra with their accessories. There’s chokers with zips, laces, feathers, rhinestones, sequins, glitter, leather, satin, velvet, you nameeeee it!
So the moral of this post is that while in 186o a black ribbon being worn around the neck of a woman could have indicated that she was a prostitute, generally wearing a choker is not a sign of prostitution. After all, the most elite of them all wore chokers as a fashion statement. Instead of generalizing based on one little part of history, let’s try to enjoy this fashion trend before it becomes a thing of the past again. if you’re not a fan of chokers, then so be it but let the rest of us who are into the trend live!
